SMART Rider “How to keep it UP-RIGHT” – Level 2
This is a “next level” course for riders who have already attended the “How to keep it UP-RIGHT” program. It will give you the opportunity to revise and expand on the skills you’ve already learnt on your previous course, and also to learn and refine new skills to help you feel more confident and enjoy your riding even more.
What will I learn on the Level 2 course?
- Slow speed turns and U-Turns: These are often the scariest and most difficult manoeuvre a rider ever has to do, and feedback tells us this was one of the most valuable exercises in the original course. Let’s work together to get them tighter and more controlled than ever before by teaching you how to master a “figure 8”. When you learn this skill you will be comfortable with BOTH left and right hand turns.
- Obstacle avoidance: There are plenty of potholes and debris on our roads at the moment, and it’d be nice to know you can avoid them even if they catch you by surprise! We’ll teach you a technique you can use to change direction rapidly and safely, so you will feel better able to avoid other vehicles or hazards that come into your path.
- Braking technique: Many people have told us in their feedback they want to have more confidence in their ability to stop the bike effectively, so we’ll teach you the same technique we use to stop the bike smoothly and safely – and in the shortest possible distance. Getting good at braking takes a lot of fear out of your riding, so we’ll help you get your braking better than ever.
- Basic maintenance: To many people motorcycle maintenance is something they know they should do but are often too scared to try. Yes, the complicated stuff should be left to a good mechanic, but the basics are important to know and do – because if something fails your life is at risk! We’ll de-mystify the whole process and give you a simple procedure to ensure the bike you’re riding is safe and sound. We’ll even give you a pocket sized checklist to takeaway to guide you when you have to do it yourself.
There will be a classroom session where we will take you deeper into some of the road craft and vehicle dynamics concepts we covered in the first course, and an “Ask Me Anything” session to answer YOUR questions about what’s important to you as a rider.
And of course there’s a mentored road ride – and we’ve planned out an interesting and more challenging road route to help you apply the principles we have covered over the two courses that will leave you feeling more confident in your own abilities. The ride will bring together the elements of improved observations and hazard avoidance, as well as road positioning, setting up for corners and correct braking methods.
This course is a key component of our SMART Rider training program, and is run in association with the Queensland Police Service with funding from Queensland Transport and Main Roads. The government funding allows us to offer this program to you at the heavily subsidised rate of just $50 per person.
