Roadcraft 1 (“How to keep it UP-RIGHT”) – Jimboomba

March 7 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm AEST

$50.00

You love riding – the freedom, the flow, the focus. But deep down, you know staying safe on two wheels takes more than passion. It takes skill, and a commitment to getting better every time you ride.

Better means knowing exactly what to do when the road doesn’t go to plan:

  • A tight bend that comes out of nowhere
  • A distracted driver turning across your path
  • A sudden stop with no time to think
  • Riding with a pillion and your balance feels off
  • A misjudged cornering line and now you’re running wide
  • And the famous “Sorry mate, I didn’t see you” (it’s not just an excuse – it’s science)

These moments demand instant reactions, remaining calm under pressure, and instinctive control. This is what you will learn on this program.

Skill Keeps You Upright. Roadcraft Keeps You Alive.

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course will give you the fundamental roadcraft skills that help every rider minimise those “OH S#!T” moments, ride with more confidence and enjoy riding more than ever. It’s road focused and road based training.

It’s a great course for newer riders who have recently got their licence – it will consolidate and take what you learned in the Q-Ride licensing courses to another level.

For experienced riders it’s a great refresher and a chance to shake out some of those “bad habits” we all develop.

The course runs from 9:00am to approximately 4:00pm and consists of three (3) modules – a seminar, practical slow skills workshop and an on-road session.

In the morning seminar you will learn:

  • The 5 Common Crash Types Riders Face – Learn exactly what causes these crashes and, more importantly, how to avoid them.
  • Vision Skills for Safer Riding – Discover how your vision directly impacts your riding and how to sharpen your ability to read the road, identify hazards early, and make split-second decisions.
  • Perceptual Blindness: Why Other Road Users Don’t See You – It’s not your imagination; it’s science. Learn how this phenomenon puts you at risk, and how to overcome it.
  • Braking Distances & Emergency Stops – Understand how to stop quickly and safely, reducing your braking distance while maintaining full control and confidence, even in emergencies.
  • The Cornering System That Removes the Fear – Master the technique that takes the guesswork out of cornering, helping you pick the perfect line every time, no matter how tight or tricky the bend.
  • Lane Positioning & Filtering Strategies – Learn the key strategies for positioning yourself in traffic and filtering safely.

You’ll finish the day not just a better rider, but a SMARTer one.

We just want to let you know… This course is the first part of a two-day comprehensive Roadcraft program.

We can only offer this program in Jimboomba and some selected regional centres, but nowhere else in the Brisbane area.

Each day is designed to stand alone, so you’ll gain real value from attending either day with no requirement to commit to both. Riders who complete both days receive the most comprehensive learning experience.

More information about the second part of the program is here.

About SMART Rider Academy

SMART Rider Academy is a privately owned Australian company established to provide cost-effective training to motorcycle riders that improves their essential roadcraft skills and enjoyment of riding.

With funding support from Queensland Transport and Main Roads, SMART Rider Academy was the first organisation in the private sector to offer subsidised training to the motorcycle community in Queensland and is now the largest provider of post-licence road-based training in the state.

In 2017 SMART Rider Academy partnered with Queensland Police Service to create and deliver the “How to keep it UP-RIGHT” program. This program has now been delivered to over 1,400 riders in South East Queensland and is the model for the new “Ride to Zero” program being offered to clubs and not-for-profit organisations throughout Queensland.

Stephen McDowall, Director and Principal Coach, leads a training team that has worked extensively with motorcycle clubs, road safety and advisory groups and other organisations across Australia and internationally for over 20 years.
